BET's College Hill: A Disgrace To Black Colleges

The heap keeps growing at Black Entertainment Television as the viewing value keeps going down the toilet.

B.E.T. (Black Entertainment Trash) and Tracey Edmonds ought to be ashamed of themselves. If you saw the recent episode of BET’s reality show College Hill-4, or even part of it, you know exactly what I am talking about.

After catching glimpses of this season, and seeing a You Tube.com video of College Hill-Season 4’s latest episode, I must say that Edmonds and BET have reached a new low.

Billed as a “must see” episode”, College Hill 4 literally became a mini-version of the WWF last Tuesday night. A brawl between a Cali girl (Krystal) and an islander (Vanessa) took center stage Tuesday night. The brawl ended with Vanessa being a bloody mess as Krystal used an object to hit her in the face during the brawl. It was sickening and sad. (See video above)

The reality show showcases students who attend historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) over one semester. Like MTV’s Real World, the chosen students live in a house together and their daily activities – good and bad - are revealed to the world. BET is seen in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

The real tragedy, however, is how BET continuously manipulates black college students and HBCUs for ratings. In March, PR Newswire reported that a record number of viewers tuned-in to the premiere of College Hill 4.

I've read that several students this season really aren't TRUE HBCU students. BET, Edmonds and the producers apparently pulled a few students from mainstream colleges and universities, and encouraged them to attend the historically black University of the Virgin Islands for one semester while BET taped the show - then after the semester was over, those students transferred back to their original non-HBCU schools.

It doesn’t sound too authentic if you ask me.

What is also disturbing is how BET/Edmonds Entertainment appears to have orchestrated and cultivated the Yankee vs. Islander divide to the point of disaster. It is socially irresponsible on the part of BET.

In previous seasons, BET and Edmonds Entertainment showed up at Southern University, Langston University and Virginia State University - all HBCUs. However, the top executives at Bleak Entertainment Television (BET), based on research, did not attend HBCU’s, which is why it appears they have no limitations on how they will portray HBCU’s and the “students” who attend them.

Now check this out:

-Debra Lee, President and Chief Operating Officer, graduated from Brown University in 1976.

-Reginald Hudlin, President of Entertainment, graduated from Harvard University in 1983.

-Robyn Lattaker-Johnson, VP of Programming Development, graduated from Art Center College of Design, year of graduation unknown.

-Tracey Edmonds, Executive Producer of College Hill, graduated from Stanford University in 1987.

Ironically, none of these people went to an HBCU based on available online biographies. However, these people are largely responsible for assembling and perpetuating a negative image of historically black colleges and universities. Would they be able to create such trash about their respective alma maters - Brown, Harvard, and Stanford? I wonder, but I don't think so. The BET Network and Viacom would probably be sued by these institutions of higher learning fast - and heads would roll. Immediate cancellation of this crap would follow. And even if HBCU alumni had been responsible for such refuse, they'd deserve the same criticisms.

We see with the mass murder of 32 students at Virginia Tech, all is not perfect at traditionally white institutions (TWIs), yet, for four seasons HBCU's have stood by idly and allowed BET's College Hill to repeatedly damage the rich legacies and purpose of HBCU’s with mostly negative imagery and stupidity by some of the students. At a time when HBCU's are struggling to increase enrollments at various campuses, College Hill's sensationalizing of HBCU's doesn't help.

Who would want to go to an HBCU after seeing some of these shows? When will faculty, staff, administrators, parents and students who care about HBCU's stand up and protest this trash BET and Edmonds are putting out?

I swear I hate BET and all that it stands for nowadays. A once rich medium for the black community has become 98% trash. And you know it has to be a dysfunctional network when it elects to run the equally-dysfunctional movie Soul Plane. Unless B.E.T. gets better, I hope and pray that Viacom will shut it down and put some people out of work like they did Don Imus.

That was a deplorable spectacle! I agree HBCU faculties, students and families should be appalled to protest.

The other thing that struck me was that the fight was even shown to the extent that it was. On any other reality show you would never see acts such as this to it's completion. I too have been disgusted with BET for a very long time.

I can only wish that TVOne would get more extensive programing and be what this community needs it to be.

Excellent post, Terrence.

I agree. College Hill does not help the cause of HBCU institutions.

Bet is poison.

oh my God... that was totally insane (in the worse way). i know ratings are garnered by conflict on these "reality" shows, but that fight was WAY OVERBOARD!

MTV's policy on The Real World would be to evict both "fighters" and we more than likely would not have even seen a bloody fight like that on the air.

whose parent's would want to see their kids on television cursing and acting like thugs, while they are supposed to be in college? my main issue with past seasons of College Hill is the vulgar language (half of the show has to be "bleeped" out) and very few of the students appear to be real students. there are never any compelling story lines and i agree with Terrence, they show the HBCU's that they visit in the worse possible light.

i feel bad for the alumni of any of the schools who had the unfortunate "luck" of having BET visit their campuses to film this show... it is embarassing!

you ask, should the show be taken off the air? how about this: BET should be taken off of the air, because BET HATES BLACK PEOPLE!

BET is worse than all of the record companies that promote the same negative subhuman words and bravado that so called musicians (rappers) put out. Did anyone catch the 60 Minutes piece on the damage this type of negativity is doing to our community? Black Entertainment Television-Whatever! They should and do know better.

Hi T.

And the 21st century minstrel show grinds on. How is this possible, you ask? Well, minstrelry was always popular with the masses, but it fell out of political favor in the 60's. But now, with black faces in black face, let the show begin! We're all niggers now, 'cause nigger is a beautiful thing!

BTW, while we're blasting BET, let's not forget NBCABCCBSPBS ETC ETC ETC....

Hey look, if you want to get serious and be the next Mr. X, might I suggest applying the business end of a baseball bat to every television you see? No kidding. Start with your own. Post a pic of the blasted thing as your next blog entry. That's real revolution, my brother.

With BET, well, I agree with D. But, I just don't get it. BET is one of the most recognized channels on the air. Why do they consistently fail to add more quality programing beyond the usual fare. I mean, they should just be ashame of themselves for the potential going to waste.

Hope you are doing okay.

I was too through with "College Hill" after the first season. If I didn't know any better, the last place I'd want to send my son was to a HBCU.

But one of the reasons that ignorant mess stays on the air is because so many of us are still tuning in and obviously can't seem to get enough of it.

According to a May 2, 2007 report on Target Market News (for Black consumers) "College Hill" placed #1 among the nation's 25 most popular cable shows in Black households . . . and if I'm not mistaken, that was for the second week in a row.

We're doing it to ourselves and from every angle (LOL).

Thanks for the enlightening info on the executives' college backgrounds. That actually explains a lot . . .

Couldn't agree more.

As an alumnus and employee of Morgan State University, this truly is not an accurate representation of the serious and committed HBCU student.

Let's see if BET and College Hill catches the same type of hell hip-hop has.

I'm so glad that my alma mater (Howard) has not hosted the show...however we get enough bad press from students on MTV reality shows (Real World and Road Rules)

i think college hill is interesting but at the same time there should be limitations.the reason y i like it is that most persons dont really kno wats goin on in HBCU skools. so who knows that jus might the way some of the real students(present) behave and we dont.the thing is BET is only partially responsilble for the bad rep now on HBCU's. the other half of the responsiblity should be placed on the staff, faculty, students and viewers.BET jus happen to put it out there a bit more.but i also think they follow MTV alot with certain white reality shows blacks as being gay are thugish or sumting negative sumtimes.

Sad thing is most of BET's viewers and target audiences are too stupid and uneducated to see that the whole culture is being mocked in everything that network does. Why do you think dave quit his show on comedy central. America is full of dumb ignorant people who have no idea when they are being belittled and degraded. BET is shit always has been always will be

I totally agree with the points and issues raised in this posting... I am currently working on a paper on how reality shows are shaping our perceptions... This blog caught my attention because I chose to write about College Hill and its extreme damage it is causing to the perception of HBCU's, and Afican Americans. It's just adding to the perception that Blacks don't take school seriously with its constant scenes at parties, clubs, bedrooms, or even brawls. I attend Spelman College and this show is nothing close to what the HBCU college experience is like.

I cannot agree with you more about Black Exploitation Television. Our daughter is on College Hill South Beach ( Season 6). All the producers want to do is to show the bad side of Black life with no intentions of doing anything with them after the show. They just pay them a little money and send them on their way. VH1 and MTV at least try to get the cast members other jobs within the network. Just because they ( the producers) are our skin does not make them our kin.
